At Durham University Day Nursery, we aim to provide high-quality childcare in a safe, secure, and stimulating environment for children from 0 to 5 years old. We operate in partnership with parents to help children become happy, independent, and well-adjusted emotionally and socially. Our nursery promotes self-confidence and a positive attitude towards learning, regardless of gender, ethnicity, home language, or educational needs. We offer a broad, balanced, and diverse curriculum that makes learning fun and prepares children with basic skills for the future. Recognizing that each child is unique, we focus on helping all children reach their maximum developmental potential by addressing their individual needs.
We also support Durham University staff and students with parental responsibilities to help them achieve their goals in study and work. Non-university staff and students are welcome to apply. The Nursery Practitioner is responsible for ensuring high-quality early years provision aligned with the EYFS framework and safeguarding policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- This role requires shift work: Monday to Friday, between 7:45 am and 6:15 pm.
- An Enhanced DBS Check is mandatory.
- Attendance at monthly meetings and training sessions, including evenings and occasional weekends, is required.
Activities and Operations:
- Service Delivery: Commit to equality, diversity, inclusion, and university values; provide excellent service; resolve routine issues; record and analyze data; promote wellbeing; adhere to professional standards; utilize office tools and systems; update procedures; ensure high-quality curriculum delivery; contribute to OFSTED inspections; safeguard children; respect confidentiality; follow health and safety policies.
- Teamwork and Supervision: Supervise and delegate tasks; train and guide new staff; assist in planning and organizing; resolve queries; work collaboratively with colleagues and external agencies.
- Communication and Networking: Gather feedback; respond to inquiries; liaise with staff, parents, and external providers; guide parents on EYFS resources.
Candidate Requirements:
- Experience working with children aged 0-5.
- NNEB, CACHE/NVQ Level 3 in Childcare (or equivalent); Level 2 English qualification if qualified after 2014.
- Knowledge of EYFS and safeguarding practices.
- Excellent communication skills; digital literacy; ongoing professional development; administrative experience; ability to work under pressure and solve problems.
Desirable Skills:
- GCSEs in English and Mathematics; Paediatric First Aid; knowledge of SEN Code of Practice; safeguarding training.
