As part of the Healthy Pregnancy Support Service (HPSS), the Practitioner will work within Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin alongside midwives and independently within community settings and patients\’ homes to provide an evidence-based behaviour change healthy lifestyle service. The needs of patients will be at the forefront of the service, which aims to improve the general health of pregnant women by encouraging healthy life choices, e.g., quitting smoking, healthy diet, and exercise. Working with women and their families to adopt a healthy lifestyle in pregnancy, the main priority will be to focus on and support smoking cessation, as this is a proven modifiable change that will reduce the risk of perinatal and infant morbidity and mortality. Another key priority will be to educate and encourage a healthy, safe diet and maintain healthy weight gain in pregnancy; promote the use of healthy start vitamins; promote the benefits and encourage the uptake of breastfeeding; and support recommended vaccination programmes for pregnant women.

Main duties of the job

  1. Providing intensive behavioural support to facilitate pregnant women through a structured, evidence-based stop smoking support programme, including offering individual choices with stop smoking medications and informing on the use of e-cigarettes to reduce risk.
  2. Educating and guiding women on reducing their baby and children\’s exposure to second-hand environmental tobacco smoke in the home to protect them from harmful effects.
  3. Using a range of communication methods, such as face-to-face, text messages, video calls, and telephone calls, to deliver support.
  4. Discussing and demonstrating healthy eating in pregnancy, maintaining healthy weight gain, and reducing excessive weight into the postnatal period.
  5. Informing women about safe physical activity during pregnancy and signposting to local services for appropriate activities.
  6. Encouraging the uptake of routine vaccinations.
  7. Using techniques and goal setting to motivate clients and provide support, information, and guidance to reduce health inequalities.
  8. Signposting women, household members, and significant others to other local healthy lifestyle services and organizations.

Working for your organization

The Healthy Pregnancy Support Service (HPSS) is seeking a band 4 advisor to join our well-established, friendly team. Since 2017, we have provided smoking cessation support to pregnant women in Telford and Wrekin, and last year, we expanded services to include all of Shropshire. Our services now also include weight management support in pregnancy and a full vaccination programme delivered alongside maternity scans at PRH and RSH. We aim to signpost women to appropriate infant feeding support locally. This multi-level public health service offers an exciting opportunity to be part of the daily operation of these services. You will receive training to become a Healthy Pregnancy Advisor, managing your own caseload and supporting families to make behavioural changes to improve health and wellbeing. Integrating this service into mainstream midwifery ensures a seamless care pathway during a critical time for receiving advice and guidance on healthy lifestyle choices, promoting a healthy pregnancy and positive outcomes for babies.
