Salary: £45,264 – £51,233 per year dependent on experience

Duration: Permanent, Full Time and Part Time (28 hours)

The Council’s in-house legal Service has an exciting opportunity for a Solicitor to join its Property team. The applicant should possess experience of a variety of areas of law that impact upon the Council’s business and in particular practicable experience of handling property transactions (residential and commercial). Experience of working for a public sector organisation would be desirable as would the practical application of commercial leasing, however, experience in all relevant forms of property law shall be considered.

The workload will be varied, challenging and interesting, dealing with some of the most high-profile property deals in Aberdeen. You will be supported in a collegiate environment and encouraged to develop a full range of legal and other skills.

The Property team deals with a wide range of transactions, including drafting and negotiation sales, purchases, investment leasing and asset management, development work, operational property advice, and general housing law. There will be a requirement to provide support to high profile capital projects.

The Property team plays an integral role in balancing the need for development and growth of Aberdeen and you will be making a positive difference to the lives of the people within the City. Applicants will also be expected to draw upon professional and commercial acumen to ensure that all legal advice is relevant and appropriate. The applicants should have a positive attitude, a willingness to learn and the ability to work as part of a team to find solutions to complex problems. The Property team is committed to the principles of modern local government and has a key role in the delivery of new and innovative projects to enhance the City of Aberdeen.

The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:

  • Admitted as a solicitor in Scotland and holding an unrestricted Practising Certificate with demonstrable post qualified experience.
  • Detailed working knowledge and experience of relevant current legislation and practice in areas of Property law (with Commercial Property experience)
  • Relevant Law Degree (LLB) and Professional Qualification.

The postholder is able to demonstrate:

  • An understanding of the provision of legal advice and representation within a public sector environment
  • Experience of negotiating a resolution to a variety of legal issues of varying complexity
  • An understanding of the requirement to manage risk in the provision of legal advice and representation to a large public sector organisation
