Lecturer in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Opportunities have arisen for a Lecturer(s) in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) at the School of Psychology. You will be a part of a BABCP level 2 accredited training programme, the only one of its kind in Wales. It is also funded by Welsh Government, so any successful candidate will become part of the drive to improve standards in CBT nationally.

Teaching on the programme is delivered on a Wednesday and the University has a range of exciting opportunities to support, with contracts ranging from 0.1FTE (3.5 hours per week), 0.2FTE (7 hours per week) and 0.4FTE (14 hours per week). The roles will include some on campus working as part of the team delivering the CBT Programmes to deliver high quality training and supervision for students on the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in CBT. All positions are available immediately and are fixed term for 1 year.

Secondment applications are welcome from within the University, however, we are unable to support secondments from other agencies, such as the NHS. Positions are available immediately and fixed term for one year.

Job Description

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Independently contribute to module and curriculum development and lead modules at postgraduate levels, inspiring students
  • To ensure that training promotes the integration of theory and research within clinical practice, and adheres to the BABCP Core Curriculum.
  • Offer specialist CBT supervision to a group of students on the postgraduate diploma programme using live supervision, assessing formative tapes and acting as academic tutor for academic submissions. To assess clinical competency with a range of approaches including CTS-R.
  • To mark and moderate student submissions on the certificate and diploma programmes in CBT.
  • To undertake teaching on the CBT postgraduate certificate and diploma courses as requested by the programme lead.
  • To take the role of academic tutor for a small group of students on the Certificate programme, providing academic support and feedback on draft submissions. Monitoring of student progress on academic work and communication with workplace managers where appropriate.
  • To be a member of the Extenuating Circumstances Group
  • To contribute to weekly programme meetings and occasional supervisor meetings, marking meetings, board of examiners and annual programme reviews.
  • To provide effective feedback on student submissions and resolve emotional distress that may accompany student failure, or educational or personal difficulties.
  • Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust
  • To participate in selection procedures for new students
  • Successful candidates may also be expected to work across related courses etc

Clinical

  • To maintain CBT clinical practice with appropriate CBT supervision.
  • To take responsibility for own clinical practice and adhering to professional and ethical standards of the BABCP and other regulatory bodies.

Research and Development

  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of research around CBT for anxiety disorders and depression.
  • Audit and report on the quality of training in the specified modules.
  • Support students in learning to critically review the evidence base for CBT.
  • Work with the programme lead and tutor to develop and carry out training related research.

Continuing Professional Development

  • To take responsibility for own continuing professional development in accordance with the requirements of BABCP and if applicable, HCPC or other professional body

Scholarship

  • Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship
  • Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work

Other

  • Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile
  • Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world

Essential Criteria

Qualifications And Education

  • Post holders are required to be BABCP Accredited CBT Practitioners and must abide by the BABCP Guidelines for Good Practice of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy.
  • Undergraduate degree and post-graduate level qualification in a field allied to mental health

Knowledge, Skills And Experience

  • Previous teaching experience at a high level of quality at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
  • Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools teaching programmes.

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media
  • The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.
  • Proven ability to co-ordinate with others to ensure student needs and expectations are met.

Other

  • Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work

Desirable Criteria

  • Successfully completed a BABCP accredited postgraduate training programme in CBT.
