Perth Crematorium
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Council\’s Bereavement Services Department as part of a small team of staff based at Perth Crematorium but also working out of Westbank Nursery. This role offers the chance to work as part of a dedicated team responsible for maintaining the safety and upkeep of headstones and memorials within the region\’s many churchyards and cemeteries.
As a Memorial Operative, you will assist the Memorial Supervisor in delivering a sensitive, efficient, and effective headstone stabilisation programme across all cemeteries and churchyards within Perth and Kinross. The role includes access to vehicles to help support duties across the area\’s 160 scenic burial grounds.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspect, record and address memorial safety issues, including laying down, moving, or securing of headstones and memorials.
Maintain accurate and confidential records of all actions taken.
Transport, set up, and operate lifting equipment as required.
Perform manual ground working and excavation tasks to allow the reposition headstones memorials safely and in line with statutory and Health and Safety regulations. The work involves both manual and mechanical digging, as well as the removal of bricks and debris, which will require some heavy and physical activities.
Skills & Experience Required
To be successful in this position you must be capable of carrying out the physical demands of the role and be able to communicate effectively with team members and the public.
A proven ability to work methodically and under pressure to achieve deadlines.
To have or be willing to obtain the required training to achieve the relevant qualification to allow headstone inspections with the ability to complete the required audit trail.
A driver\’s licence is essential for this post but the ability to tow a trailer (C1+E) is preferred but not essential. You must have a valid UK driving licence as this post requires you to travel to a variety of locations across Perth and Kinross.
Working manually with hand tools and mini digger experience is desirable but not essential for this post.
You should be fit and of good health, as this role can be physically demanding, and you must show a willingness to work outdoors and in all weather conditions.
You will be a practical and conscientious individual, capable of working effectively within a team to deliver the Council\’s headstone stabilisation strategy. Attention to detail, an understanding of Health and Safety requirements, and a respectful approach to the sensitive nature of the work are essential.
