Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Kidlington, Oxfordshire
About Us:
Electrogenic is a world-leading EV powertrain OEM, renowned for our technology and our elegant re-powering of classic cars. We develop cutting-edge EV technology for our global partner-installers, for vehicle manufacturers, and the defence sector. In the UK, we also offer bespoke conversion services. The business is continuing to expand, creating opportunities across the business.
Developing EV powertrain technology, manufacturing “drop-in” EV powertrain kits and carrying out bespoke car conversions requires a range of capabilities, experience and specialist roles. The key is teamwork and we are looking for focussed people with a positive outlook who can carry out their unique roles within the company while supporting, and being supported by, the wider team. Electrogenic is a growing business with plenty of scope for career progression.
The opportunity is to work in a fast-paced environment at the cutting edge in its field. At Electrogenic you see your designs progress to completed vehicles that you can test drive within a few months. We have lots of exciting projects and a talented, close-knit team. If you have real expertise, a flexible mind and an enthusiasm for all things automotive, Electrogenic is your natural home!
Your Role:
This role reports to the Principal Design Engineer and is a key part of the design team that designs and integrates our electric vehicle conversions and EV conversion kits. The role has plenty of scope for whole-powertrain design, ensuring that our bolt-in powertrains remain the best-in-class and that their integration within the vehicles is of the highest standard. You will work with our electrical and software engineers, while working as an integral part of our design team. You will ensure our design language is applied throughout all our products, ensuring design for production and value engineering. You will ensure that the finished product drives beautifully and is aesthetically pleasing.
The opportunity is for real job satisfaction, as you re-power classic vehicles to be the best that they can possibly be, and help create new generations of OEM and Defence vehicles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Carry out the design of powertrains including EV conversion “kits”, new vehicle prototypes, Defence work and bespoke vehicle conversions
- Carry out detailed mechanical design work, including 3D modelling, prototyping, and design verification testing, while ensuring compliance with automotive industry standards and legal vehicle conversion regulations
- Select mechanical components with consideration for standardisation, obsolescence, availability, and cost.
- Prepare and present mechanical designs at design reviews, while ensuring design files and information are up-to-date and stored appropriately within the PDM.
- Liaise with other departments, including sales and marketing, mechanical build, electrical, and production to ensure products are designed for manufacture & assembly and customer requests are handled efficiently.
- Ensure all supporting documentation is complete and available such as BoM’s, installation guides, etc.
- Any other requests as necessary in a fair and reasonable manner.
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have
- A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline
- A minimum of three years’ experience as a mechanical engineering designer
- Automotive experience.
- Advanced SolidWorks proficiency.
- Expertise in designing bespoke automotive projects.
- Proficiency in GD&T
- Proficiency in creating detailed 2D drawings for manufacture.
- Practical experience in assembly and testing.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Experience working to tight deadlines in a customer-centric business.
Re-engineering a vehicle to drive better than it ever did requires a range of skills and familiarity with automotive systems, including suspension, braking, transmission, as well as other systems such as air conditioning. Ultimately, our watch-word is that we do not permanently alter the vehicles in any way – all our systems respect the original vison of the vehicle in question and do not require any drilling, cutting or welding of the host.
Desirable Experience:
- Familiarity with business tools such as Asana, Jira, etc.
- Familiarity of EV systems and battery design is desirable but not essential – we have a lot of experience of these aspects already in Electrogenic, and our electrical and electronic designs are mature. The challenge is making the mechanical design more efficient.
