The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the financial stewardship of the University, its financial strategy and leads and directs the University’s Directorate of Finance. Ensuring an effective and proactive financial service that provides robust financial management; the role also ensures institutional financial sustainability; and supports the achievement of the University’s strategic objectives. Reporting directly to the Principal and Vice Chancellor, the CFO will make an essential contribution to ensure Edinburgh continues to build on its success as one of the world’s most distinguished universities. The Chief Financial Officer will be responsible for c.315 staff across the Finance Directorate, with 9 direct reports.

The Person

  • Chartered Accountant with proven ability as a Finance leader, working within a complex organisation of a comparable scale, with the demonstrable ability to lead change successfully.

  • Strategic capability with track record of participation as a key member of an executive or senior leadership team, able to participate fully in the strategic and operational leadership of the University

  • Commercial decision-making experience, gained in the private or public sector. An understanding of and empathy with higher education and public sector finances would be beneficial.
