Expanded are currently recruiting for a Section Engineer to work in Wales onour Margam Substation project.

We have been appointed to deliver vital network upgrade works at Margam substation in Port Talbot, Wales, for National Grid. The project is a key step in enabling green steel production at Port Talbot and in supporting local jobs, while also providing capacity for future energy connections in the region.

National Grid will be working with principal contractor Laing O\’Rourke to build the two new GIS facilities, both using innovative switchgear technology which is free from sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) – a commonly used electrical insulator that is also a potent greenhouse gas.

Role

Engineering Methods
Applies LOR procedures and company standards; conducts accurate setting out and as-built surveys using CAD and digital models; ensures calibrated equipment and adherence to tolerances; mentors junior engineers.

Quality & Testing
Implements ITPs and QA procedures; prepares and enforces method statements; monitors subcontractor quality; maintains records, raises NCRs, and promotes a ’right first time’ culture; understands DfMA principles.

Materials & Permanent Works (MPPS)
Understands MPPS limitations, costs, and testing; manages approvals, materials, and site testing; controls wastage and ensures compliance with specs and safety standards.

Construction Methods & Innovation
Applies proven methods, documents lessons learned, drives productivity and value engineering; communicates technical methods effectively and ensures documentation compliance.

Temporary Works & Lifting
Applies LOR Temporary Works and Lifting procedures; undertakes TWS/TWC roles on low–medium risk schemes; prepares design briefs and load assessments.

Design Process
Engages with design management; applies codes, standards, and CDM principles; understands contractor design, modular systems, and 3D/4D modelling; manages design revisions and change control.

Information & Change Control
Maintains current design information via EDMS; communicates updates; raises TQs and manages RDCs; verifies and records as-built data.

Requirements

  • First degree in Civil Engineering Discipline, other construction related degree, or an industry recognised technical or engineering qualification (e.g. HNC, HND, NVQ level 4) plus demonstrable experience in a construction delivery environment.
  • Circa 5 years relevant technical / practical experience within an engineering role.
  • Structures experience – desirable
  • Eligible to work in the UK / valid UK visa
  • Professionally qualified / chartered by a recognised body – desirable
