Laing O\’Rourke is currently recruiting for a Section Engineer to work on our Margam substation project.

We have been appointed to deliver vital network upgrade works at Margam substation in Port Talbot, Wales, for National Grid. The project is a key step in enabling green steel production at Port Talbot and in supporting local jobs, while also providing capacity for future energy connections in the region.

National Grid will be working with principal contractor Laing O\’Rourke to build two new GIS facilities, both using innovative switchgear technology which is free from sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) – a commonly used electrical insulator that is also a potent greenhouse gas.

What will the role look like?

  • Supporting the development of designs, planning, and costing.
  • Drafting scopes under NRSWA for mitigation, including coordination of subcontractors and agreement of works.
  • Coordination of site and construction works, regarding logistics and programme planning.
  • Providing accurate dimensional control, checking that established by others, to enable the works to be constructed to the required tolerances as defined by the contract/design documents. Carrying out surveys for design, as-built, and payment purposes.
  • Assisting site foremen and managers in supervising site operatives and subcontractors to ensure works are constructed in accordance with design drawings, specifications, and standards as defined by the contract documents.
  • Producing method statements and risk assessments for approval by supervising engineers/managers, ensuring site operations follow safe systems of work, e.g., method statements, task sheets, and procedures.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or other construction-related degree, or an industry-recognized technical or engineering qualification (e.g., HNC, HND, NVQ level 4) with demonstrable experience in a construction delivery environment.
  • Experience with structures.
  • Valid UK visa.
