The School of Medicine, based at the Heath Park Campus, is seeking a Technician to work as part of a Core technical team providing on‑site building technical support within the School of Medicine, carrying out supporting work, providing advice, guidance and technical expertise.

Job Description
To provide professional core/building technical support to the School of Medicine.
Duties And Responsibilities
Key Duties
- Provide a service to staff and students by maintaining, calibrating, servicing and repairing materials, machinery and equipment within the laboratory, advising and training staff and students on their appropriate use using established guidelines, providing building inductions for new staff/students.
- Prepare all materials and equipment as necessary for customers’ use and ensure area of responsibility is kept clean and tidy.
- Ensure areas of responsibility are kept clean and tidy.
- Coordinate the decontamination, service and repair of laboratory equipment.
- Undertake stock control, ensuring adequate security and levels of stock are maintained and stock is distributed as required.
- Deal with routine enquiries from internal and external customers in a professional manner, following established procedures, referring complex enquiries to relevant staff members, ensuring all relevant facts and information needed is recorded and passed on.
- Assist in the maintenance of routine records (including inventories), updating databases and analysing routine data/information as required.
- Plan and manage small projects ensuring the effective use of resources.
- Ensure that health and safety, environmental and/or infection control methods are being adhered to in line with established School of Medicine and Cardiff University procedures, reporting any fundamental issues to the H&S representative.
- Administer, organise and manage maintenance requests on behalf of several areas within the School of Medicine.
- Manage and provide basic training on the Ultra Freezer Facility to include daily visual checks, routine filter cleaning and ensuring correct use of the Buildings’ emergency backup freezer to comply with the Human Tissue Act (2004).
- When appropriate, assist with School staff/equipment relocations.
- Co‑ordinate equipment required to facilitate engagement events such as Open Days.
- Support set‑up for student/teaching activities.
- Cover reception as needed due to unexpected absence.
- Apply some flexibility to working hours when required.
- Participate actively within the work team, setting an example and showing a flexible approach to delivering team results.

Essential Criteria
Qualifications and Education
- NVQ 2/GCSE level A–C or equivalent qualification/work‑related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Experience in constructing, maintaining and repairing equipment.
- Significant experience in working in a technical support role.
- Proficient in the use of appropriate IT packages, e.g. Word and Excel.
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a wide range of people.
- Evidence of working well as an effective team member, providing advice and guidance to other team members where necessary.
- Ability to deal promptly, effectively and courteously with requests for information or service.
Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving
- Ability to use initiative in solving problems and responding to queries, ensuring compliance with standard procedures and practices.
- Ability to work on own initiative and unsupervised to deadlines, planning, organising and setting priorities for own work, as well as managing small projects as appropriate.

- Ability to follow and develop Standard Operating Procedures and review regularly.
Desirable Criteria
- A-levels or an equivalent qualification or equivalent work‑related experience in a lab setting.
- A willingness to undertake further training and development.
- Experience of working in a Higher Education environment.
- Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.
