We have an exciting opportunity for a Community Builder to join our Community Development team.

About The Role

As a Community Builder, you will play a key role in our Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, supporting the charity’s goal to expand our reach and create a positive impact for members of the armed forces community facing challenges. You will develop sustainable, community-led solutions to improve their well-being by identifying local strengths, fostering connections, and creating new networks to drive positive change.

We are seeking a motivated and dynamic individual passionate about collaboration and community-led change. If you believe in the power of strong, connected communities, this role is for you.

Working closely with Community Development Managers across regions in the UK, you will facilitate opportunities for members of the Armed Forces community (AFC) and their families to connect with Help for Heroes and their local communities.

About You

You should have experience working with communities to enable community-led change, ideally with Asset-Based Community Development experience. Strong organizational skills, energy, and the ability to listen, build relationships, and inspire collaboration are essential to creating lasting positive change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct outreach to highlight community strengths and encourage engagement.
  • Develop and embed an ABCD-informed way of working.
  • Identify ‘Connectors’ within the community and facilitate regular gatherings to exchange learning and map assets. Empower community members to share their strengths, co-create initiatives, and foster a sense of belonging and ownership.
  • Support community-led actions responding to AFC interests and aspirations through peer-led or co-designed initiatives.
  • Increase awareness of challenges faced by military personnel, veterans, and their families.

About You

  • Having a Community Development qualification or experience in asset-based community development with transferable skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships that drive action.
  • Proven success in collaborating with internal and external partners and stakeholders.

Additional Requirements

The successful candidate must be based within a 30-minute commute of their locality center and be willing to travel regularly within a 75-mile radius (expenses covered). A valid full UK driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle with business insurance are required. Occasional travel to other UK locations for meetings and events may also be necessary.

The role involves working 35 hours per week over 5 days, Monday to Sunday, with core days Monday to Friday. Flexibility is essential, as evening and weekend work will be required. Hours will vary to total 70 hours over a two-week period.

The successful candidate must undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

You will join a newly formed Community Development team dedicated to embedding Asset-Based Community Development, strengthening communities and empowering the Armed Forces community to thrive through partnerships and initiatives.
